Nablus: The President of al-Quds Open University inaugurates a symposium entitled Combating Violence Among Youth

Nablus Branch, in collaboration with the Directorate of Police in Nablus Governorate, organized a symposium entitled “Combating Violence Among Youth” on Wednesday, 23-3-2022, at the University theatre, in the presence of Prof. Samir Najdi, the president of QOU, Prof. Yousef Awad, vice president for social responsibility, Prof. Mohammad Shaheen, president assistant for students’ affairs, Dr. Suheil Abu Mayyaleh, director of Nablus Branch, head and members of the supporting committee, members of the academic and administrative bodies and students at the branch, Mr. Ahmad Abu Setah,  member of Fatah movement in Nablus region, Mr. Awad Meshel, head of the employees’ union, and Mr. Ziad al-Wawi, head of the Student Council.

Prof. Samir Najdi delivered a speech saying that the University’s philosophy has succeeded in promoting a distinguished educational culture that has proven its effectiveness at the national, Arab, and international levels. The University kept pace with scientific advancement, promoted openness in teaching and learning, and adopted blended learning that combines traditional education and e-learning. Blended learning became the latest modern approach adopted by the most prestigious international universities. 

Prof. Najdi pointed out that the University is keen to convey its mission of preparing qualified graduates to meet the needs of the community, capable of competing in the local and regional labor market, and marking an effective and distinguished contribution in the field of scientific research. The University exerts its efforts to build technical and human capacities by providing educational and training programs in accordance with the philosophy of blended learning, taking into account the latest standards of quality and excellence, to realize the objectives of teaching and learning at the lowest financial cost.

On the spread of the phenomenon of violence, Prof. Najdi said, “We note the widespread and permeation of violence recently in our society, as it is considered one of the most expanded manifestations of misbehavior in the world, causing psychological and physical harm to the abused person and the community. Recently, we have witnessed many negative reflections that result from violence, including sabotage and the destruction of personal and public properties. We must use all the methods through which we seek to eliminate this phenomenon and promote dealing with mercy and kindness.”

Dr. Bakr Abd al-Haq, Lt. Luay Wahdan, Director of the Family Protection and Juvenile Department in Nablus Police, and Ms. Iman Shtayyeh, a faculty member in the Family and Social Development Program, participated with a speech in the symposium.

Ms. Shtayyeh addressed violence in schools, as well as the bad companions and the impact of the societal environment in this matter.

Lt. Wahdan spoke about how the police established a unit specialized in following up on cases of violence against women, which includes several issues such as electronic extortion, girls running away from families, as well as sexual assaults. Mr. Wahdan also discussed the issue of combating violence against young people.

Dr. Abdel Haq tackled the impact of social media and drama in increasing the phenomenon of violence, pointing out the importance of employing social media in a positive way to reduce youth-based violence, as well as working to enhance awareness about media education and stop the flow of unwanted information, which negatively affect society.

The symposium was moderated by Colonel Amjad Farahta, who asked several questions to the speakers and attendees, which enriched the discussion and interaction.

On the other hand, the President of the University, Prof. Najdi, during his visit to the Nablus branch, listened separately to the needs and demands of students and workers. Prof. Najdi honored the employees in the branch on the occasion of Mother’s Day and International Women’s Day. He also met with the building Committee of the Nablus branch.
