:Abstract
The main objective of this paper is to highlight the melancholic and tragic fate on Thomas Hardy's novel Jude the Obscure in general and on its characters in particular
The research is divided into four sections. The first section includes the introduction that sheds light on Thomas Hardy's life in addition to his relation to naturalism, determinism and Darwinism. The second section defines melancholia according to Freud and others, and then presents the influence of melancholia and tragic fate in the novel. Section three discusses melancholic and the tragic fate on specific characters while section four holds some comparison of parallelism between different characters. Some conclusions will be drawn in the end
