Media Production Center (MPC)

  MPC Units

 Management Unit:

Management is the beating heart of the Media Production Center, where it coordinates, organizes and controls MPC’s administrative and artistic procedures. MPC’s management also coordinates with the Academic Program Directors to accomplish the following:

  1. Produce Educational Multimedia within a clear and specified Quarterly Plan, by choosing which courses require supporting educational multimedia; as well as nominating Academic Advisors that are capable of preparing and presenting the educational content and videotaping it.
  2. Follow-ups to the proper and timely execution of the Quarterly Plan.
  3. Follow and review with the Academic Advisor the successful preparation of the educational content, its review and finally videotaping.
  4. Follow-up the distribution process to all QOU Educational Regions and Centers.
  5. Not to mention that the Management Unit duties include control of correspondence, administrative files, incoming and outgoing mail/e-mail…etc

 Directing Unit:

The duty of this unit is to transform the typed educational content into Audio/Visual format; as well as supervision of the main components in production, such as:

  • Lighting
  • Videotaping
  • Audio
  • Montage
  • Graphics

 Graphics Unit:

The Graphics Unit designs and coordinates all educational slides’ text, as well as their audio and visual content with their supporting and appropriate effects, where this whole package will be transferred into the videotaped media. The Graphics Unit also designs and edits MPC’s requirements for still, 2D and 3D graphics, through the following stages:

  • Coordinate and unify color usage, as well as font type and size.
  • Design proper and unified background for the slides.
  • Design and add photographs and pictures.
  • Review educational slides, and then add audio/visual effects and animation.

Equipment:

Graphics Workstation: A specialized computer that best handles graphics software. These stations take into consideration larger memory size, faster processors and advanced Audio as well as video interface cards.
Scanner: To transform pictures and printed material into digital format to enable the unit to edit and use.
Graphics Printer: Specialized for the Media Production Center’s high resolution art pieces, quality wise and not necessary quantity wise.

Software:

Microsoft Power Point: For simple presentations utilizing slides and animation.
Adobe Photoshop: For editing, designing and creating genuine art pieces.
Macromedia Flash: For 2D animation, which include adding audio/video clips and effects.
3DMAX/MAYA/AUTOCAD: For 3D presentations; where models, faces and decors are built with their proper lighting and camera views to create real-life scenes -- utilizing different effects.

Videotaping Unit:

Videotaping is one of the fundamental steps in producing supporting educational multimedia, where videotaping takes two forms:

  • Internal videotaping (studio):
The presenting Academic Advisor is videotaped from different angels in the studio, where multiple cameras are used to obtain unique and photogenic views.
  • External videotaping (field – outside the MPC):
For courses, such as those for the Agriculture Program, that require field videotaping, they are videotaped outside the Media Production Center and on-location. This type of videotaping includes some of the events and activities at Al-Quds Open University, such as seminars and workshops.
As far as Equipment, our current inventory of video cameras include:
  1. 2 digital cameras/DVCAM/Sony DS R-300AL/300 AP with electronic viewfinders.
  2. Digital Camera/Mini DV Cam/Sony DSR-PD 170 P.
  3. Digital Still Camera/Kodak easy share DX 6490.

Duties of this unit (Audio Studio) are divided into two parts:

Audio Unit:

Duties of this unit (Audio Studio) are divided into two parts:

First: Audio Material:

Recording, editing and duplicating in its final form is initiated based on each contents’ needs; regardless if its placed on the old fashioned Audio Tapes, new Compact Disks, or any other media type or shape that arises from necessity, such as for broadcasting on the internet. The Audio Studio is also utilized for musical recordings and community use
- in cooperation with other organizations for production of audio material.

Second: Visual Material:
The Audio Unit, in-parallel with the videotaping and Control Unit meet on the same videotape after videotaping the Academic Advisor. This unit also covers the University’s audio needs in their internal and external activities.

Hardware used:
SoundCraft (spirit328), HP Workstation xw6200, DAT Player, Dual CD player, Single CD player, Single and dual TapeDeck, player/recorder, Minidisk Player/Recorder, AM/FM Tuner, DBX compressor/expander, Audio Limiter, Audio Patch Panel, Dynamic, condenser and neck mics.

Software used:
Samplitude, Wavelab, Neuendo, Cubase, Soundforge, BMP Studio

 Montage Unit:

The Montage Unit edits all work that is videotaped in/for the Media Production Center, where the majority of its work centers on educational media and documentaries.
The process of editing the educational videos is in two stages:

The first stage (Linear Stage):
During the videotaping, the camera-view of the lecturing instructor in the studio is mixed with the graphical slides in the control room to visually and properly explain the educational content of the subject matter. Right then-and-there it is recorded in digital format and handed over for the following stage.

The second stage (Non-linear Stage):
The previously mentioned recording is entered in the Montage Workstation Unit. The Montage Unit is an advanced and specialized computer workstation for editing all mistakes and retakes that existed during the videotaping; the workstation also gives the ability to add new/adjusted audio, video and textual content and effects.

After completing these steps, the sound track of the production is tested, controlled and adjusted; then finally a graphical introduction and Credits Eoinding is added, so the educational videotape can be packaged and sent to the Evaluation Committee.

The Montage Unit currently has four advanced Montage Units, linear and non linear, which are:

Linear:
Panasonic MX70 digital Audio/Video mixer.

Non-linear:
Avid Xpro /HP workstation XW6200
Premiere Pro 2.0 / HP workstation XW8200
Edit 6.0 / IBM Z pro

 Archive Unit:

The unit handles the evaluated and approved educational multimedia produced at the Media Production Center in Ramallah and Amman for archiving, storage, and duplication to all Al-Quds Open University branches, through the following:

  1. The videotape’s detailed information is entered in the Archive’s database.
  2. The Master copy of the DVCAM, BETACAM, DVD, VHS and CD is classified and stored in the archive room.
  3. Transformation of the above mentioned into VHS format for delivery to the 22 branches (Regions and Centers) of the university. (The archive unit is currently in the process of implementing a new project where ALL of MPC productions will be transferred and duplicated into VCDs to ease the process of distribution, as well as diversify the productions to QOU learners).
  4. Continuous and periodical follow-ups with the university branches to provide them with the needed educational multimedia produced in Ramallah and Amman.
