About the MPC
Background:
The establishment of the Media Production Center is based on an international agreement, which was signed between the German government and the P.L.O., which was represented by the Palestinian National Authority, on May 12th, 1997.

The idea of the project was to establish a media production center in Ramallah to support the Distance Learning (DL) of Al-Quds Open University. The tasks of the center include recording, filming, editing according to the educational subject, a method of delivery.
The implementation of the project started in May 2000 through the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). According to the agreement, the university provided the suitable space and working team, including executive experts and assistants to carry out the project. The GTZ provided the equivalent counterparts to follow up and do the essential training.
The GTZ allocated the amount of 329,000 DM to cover the cost of the first phase of the project by providing the center with the following:
- Photo studio, A full sound system studio, PC based video editing unit.
- PC graphics work station, cables and equipment, video cassettes, spare parts.

Since 2003 the German Development Service (DED) has also supported the MPC in providing the center with equipment. The DED agreed on providing the center with a media expert to train and advise the staff on the production of educational media. This expert has started his work in February 2005.

The Main Goal of the Center: The main goal of the center is the production of videocassettes, audio cassettes, C.D. or Data-tapes, using the most technically developed methods to support the content of QOU textbooks, and to help its students based on QOU academic departments' demands.
Other Goals: include holding training courses and workshops in the use of the latest technical achievements in the area of media production. This could be done through the help of the center’s working teem, in addition to cooperating with the local and foreign training experts.
A second goal includes training of technicians working in the same field (visual and audio) in governmental or private institutions, to meet the needs of the society for such training.
A third goal is the implementation of any technical services that would serve other Palestinian institutions.
Achievements of the Center and the Future Vision:
The media production center started the work of producing educational videos since its establishment. Apart from the regular production and distribution of educational media, it has accomplished the following:
- The production of a documentary film about Al-Quds Open University in Arabic and English.
- The total production of 90 educational videos.
- The conversion of 25 audio English tapes into CDs.
- Copying the educational videos produced in the university’s office in Amman and distributing them to the university educational regions and its study center.
- The production of a number of multimedia CDs containing all the English material for each course on one CD.
- The re-production of a first-aid training visual CD.
- The center has done a number of TV Panel discussion programs by photographing and producing these programs. It has completed a number of films for Palestinian institutions such as Al-Esteqlal TV, the Arab Orphan's school, Noun’s Center, Goethe Institute, and others.
At present, the educational videos are being transmitted through Al-Esteqlal television. The transmission covers some parts of the West Bank. We hope to strengthen the transmission to cover all the university regions and its educational centers in Palestine.
