Three students from Al-Quds Open University in Jenin have succeeded in producing and building a sensory room for children with autism, aimed at facilitating parental care for children with this neurobehavioral condition. The project which was developed by students: Maram Abu Obaid, Amna Badarneh, and Baraa Qasim Suleiman was supervised by of instructor Laith Ibrahim in Jenin Branch.

The students explained that the system monitors the behavior and performance of the child easily through a live broadcast camera, allowing access to parents, and easily keep the child under surveillance.

The sensory room will also have a sport room to enable the child to play sports safely and in an enthusiastic and encouraging atmosphere, where it produces applause sounds and beautiful lights urging the child to follow and develop physical work, in addition to monitoring the behavior of the child through the camera. The system also monitors the child acoustically and reacts to changes in behavior. For example, when a child goes through a tantrum, the system detects it through the sound sensor and calms it down immediately by releasing quiet music that relieves stress while illuminating the room in colors that attract the children’s attention and distracts them from the cause of their stress.

For his part, Instructor Laith Ibrahim said that this project attempts to promote cognition in autistic children and works on a system to enhance communication and interaction skills in children with autism. In general, students in this project studied the behavior of autistic children and tried to integrate children with autism with other children through this project.
